Translation is the conversion of the written language from one language to another (e.g. legal documents, contracts, marketing copy, etc). Translation services are usually charged based on the total number of words that have been translated.
Interpretation is the verbal conversion of language (e.g. face to face, court hearings, arbitrations, trade shows, conferences, legal depositions, client meeting, 3-way teleconferences or video conferences, etc). Interpretation services are usually charged based upon the number of hours (or days) during which the interpreter is actively interpreting for the client. There are simultaneous and consecutive modes of interpretation.
Sight translation is the conversion of written words in one language into spoken words in another language.
Transcription is the conversion of spoken words in one language into written words in that language.
